Kamaru Usman has emerged as the heavy betting favourite over Leon Edwards ahead of their rematch at UFC 278, The PUNCH reports.
The UFC welterweight champion and MMA Fighting’s No. 1 pound-for-pound fighter in the sport, Usman is officially set to face Edwards in a rematch on Aug. 20 in Salt Lake City. The UFC announced the long-rumoured bout during the pay-per-view broadcast for UFC 275, and online oddsmakers already like Usman’s chances at defeating Edwards for a second time.
Usman is currently listed as more than a 2-to-1 favourite (-250) to successfully defend his welterweight title against Edwards (+210), according to BetOnline.
In their first meeting back in December 2015 as part of a UFC Fight Night Orlando event, Usman managed to defeat Edwards with a unanimous decision win over the course of three rounds, early into the pair’s respective UFC tenures.
For Edwards, the Birmingham native has enjoyed a 10-fight undefeated run since his UFC Orlando defeat to Usman seven years ago, most recently defeating Nate Diaz at UFC 263 last June.
In prior title defences, Usman, a native of Auchi, Nigeria successfully handed losses to Covington (x2), Jorge Masvidal (x2), and former Sanford MMA training partner, Gilbert Burns.
In his most recent Octagon appearance back in November last year, Usman successfully landed his sixth defence of the welterweight title – defeating former interim gold holder, Colby Covington, with a unanimous decision win.
