On the 20th of May, 2021, the University of Jos (UNIJOS) announced a suspension of academic activities which had initially began on Monday, the 17th of May, 2021.
The school had originally been gearing up for a full resumption, having lost several months to the COVID-19 pandemic. However, for reasons unstated, they gave a directive to suspend all lectures until the 7th of June, 2021.
Sources indicate that the university had initially asked students to leave the hostels, given the poor security situation. However, students didn’t have any other accommodation and complained about lectures commencing while they were practically homeless.
Once again, while the reason for suspension wasn’t stated, some speculate that the directive was motivated by the constant cloud of insecurity hanging over the school. Others believe it to be a controversy regarding the selection of the new Vice Chancellor of the school.
Regardless various stakeholders expressed dissatisfaction concerning the development because the school had missed an entire session.
