The UK Government has returned the sum of €4,214,017 recovered from the family of convicted former Delta State Governor, James Ibori. This information was confirmed yesterday, May 19, 2021, by Abubakar Malami, Minister of Justice.
According to the Minister, the amount was paid by the British into a designated Nigerian account on Monday, May 10, 2021. Malami has described the development as a “demonstration of recognition of the reputation Nigeria earns through records of management of recovered stolen funds in the execution of public-oriented projects.”
However, many Nigerians would call this statement by the Minister an attempt to whitewash the nefarious tendency of looting state funds. Unfortunately, this is a practice that Nigeria has become infamous for.
The former Delta State Governor, Ibori, was convicted in 1991 in the UK for stealing from a store where he worked in London. Subsequently, in the year 2012, he was again convicted by the British government. This time, for the crime of fraud relating to funds totalling £50m.
