The Vice President of Tanzania, Samia Suluhu Hassan, is set to become the first female President in East Africa.
According to the Tanzanian constitution, Mrs Hassan will succeed the former President of Tanzania, John Magufuli, who was announced dead via a statewide broadcast yesterday, March 17.
Magufuli’s tenure which ends in 2025 will now be completed by Samia Hassan who will become the sixth president of Tanzania.
Prior to her election as Vice President, Mrs Hassan was the Minister of State, in the office of the Vice President in charge of Union Affairs. She also served as the Minister for Tourism, Trade, and Investment from 2005-2010 and as the Minister of Youth Employment, Women and Children Development, from 2000-2005.
