Nurse Who Slept With Patient but Claimed Rape Has been Sentenced to Prison

A nurse has been sentenced to 18 months in prison and two years of extended supervision for engaging in a sexual relationship with a patient and falsely accusing him of sexual assault. Melissa Knutson, 30, was convicted of misconduct in public office and obstructing an officer over the incident, which occurred in 2022 while she worked with the Monroe County Drug Court.

Knutson administered Vivotrol, a medication for substance abuse, to the patient and initiated a sexual relationship with him. When authorities investigated, she falsely claimed the patient had sexually assaulted her, citing fear for her safety and her family’s well-being. However, text messages revealed she started the relationship and planned to deny it if exposed.

The case sparked outrage after Knutson’s deceit was exposed. “She abused her position of power and trust,” prosecutors said. Knutson’s guilty plea acknowledged her actions were wrong and harmful.

The patient, who was part of a drug court program, was devastated by the ordeal. His life was upended by Knutson’s false allegations, and he’s now seeking justice.

Knutson’s sentence serves as a stark reminder of the consequences of exploiting vulnerable individuals. Her actions undermined trust in healthcare professionals and caused irreparable harm.

The incident highlights the need for stricter safeguards to protect patients from abuse. Healthcare providers must prioritize patient safety and well-being.
