North West Football Awards : Liverpool winger beats Shoretire to Rising Star of the Season
Manchester United winger Shola Shoretire missed out on the Rising Star of the Season at the 2021 North West Football Awards held at The Point, Old Trafford on Monday evening.
The regional awards celebrates players who have achieved footballing excellence on and off the pitch over the past twelve months.
Shoretire was on a seven-man shortlist for the Rising Star of the Season and faced competition from Harvey Elliott (Liverpool), Curtis Jones (Liverpool), Kyle Joseph (Swansea City), Calum Macdonald (Tranmere Rovers), Sepp van den Berg (Preston North End) and Jerry Yates (Blackpool).
The England U19 international of Nigerian descent was beaten to the accolade by Liverpool winger Harvey Elliot who spent the whole of last season on loan at Championship club Blackburn Rovers.
Shoretire excelled last season, making his debut in the Premier League and Europa League, and was the top scorer for United’s U23s with 10 goals in the Premier League 2.
The Anglo-Nigerian was named Manchester United’s Jimmy Murphy Young Player of the Year for 2020-2021.
The 17-year-old has picked up where he left off last season, directly participating in eight goals in fifteen appearances for the Red Devils youth teams this term.
