Air Vice-Marshal M.A Yakubu, the Director of Procurement for the Nigeria Air Force (NAF) stated yesterday that the military required a yearly budget of about $2bn to battle insecurity and terrorism in the country. He said this at a hearing put together by the House of Representatives Committee on Defence on Armed Forces Support Trust Fund Establishment Bill 2021.
He explained that many of the manufacturers in the military equipment industry often insist on getting paid in full before they begin producing equipment. This is beside the cost of training to handle said equipment.

M.A Yakubu also noted that the NAF required a Tucano aircraft that was paid for in full in just thirty days, a transaction that wouldn’t have been possible had the payment lasted longer.
In M.A Yakubu’s opinion, there is a need for alternative funding sources so that the military can rise up to its responsibility.
