Kelechi Iheanacho scored what ended as the match winner for the senior national team of Nigeria as they open their AFCON 2021 campaign with a win over Egypt.
Iheanacho rifled home and unstoppable drive past Egyptian goalkepper Mohammed El Shenawy in the 30th minute off a pass from Joe Aribo. He celebrated the goal with his 2013 Nigeria U17 teammate Taiwo Awoniyi.
The pair were devastating in attack for Nigeria in their run up to the title nine years ago and celebrated by pointing their hands to the sky. Same thing like they did yesterday after the goal scored by Iheanacho.
Explaining the goal celebration after the game, the Leicester City forward said it’s a tribute to the coach who gave them their first breakthrough in international football as this is the first time they are playing as a pair at senior level.
” It was our celebration during the U17 World Cup nine years ago. It’s our own way of saying thank you to the technical crew led by coach Manu Garba. We dream of leading the attack for Nigeria nine years ago and it happened. It’s a nice way to start the tournament”, he told OwnGoalNigeria.com in an exclusive chat after the game.
