New Borussia Dortmund Signing Karim Adeyemi says he appreciates his Nigerian roots even though he feels more German than any other country.
Born in Germany to a Nigerian father and a Romanian mother making him eligible for all three countries, he has however represented Germany from U16 right up to senior level.
According to the wing forward, his father migrated from Nigeria to Germany to play professional football but he came at a very late age hence couldn’t cut it at any level higher to catch the interest of the world.
The 20 year old who scored 19 goals in 27 games for RB Salzburg in Austria which earned him the move to Dortmund, while speaking to the Austrian media reveals his strong connection to Nigerian even though he feels German.
” My connection to Nigeria, the country of my father is strong. I can’t even deny it because my father ensured I was brought up with all the norms and knowledge of the yoruba culture. I cherish my roots so well even though I feel German”, he was quoted as saying by Heute.
He admitted that even though his father’s dream was for him to play for the senior national team of Nigeria, he still supported his choice of deciding to play for Germany at senior level.
” The discussion started early. Very early into my career but at the end I was left alone to make my choice. My father always wanted me to play for Nigeria but he fully support my decision to play for Germany”, he concluded.
