Ekiti court sentences four to death for robbery, murder

An Ekiti State High Court sitting in Ado Ekiti has sentenced four persons to death by hanging for armed robbery and murder.

The convicts are Babagida Amodu, 25; Oluwafemi Ibrahim, 20; Ojo Ayodele, 25; and Okunato Dada, 20.

The men were tried on three counts of conspiracy, robbery and murder.

According to the charges filed by the police, the four convicts on June 7, 2018, at Ijoka area, Ado Ekiti, conspired and robbed one Ibrahim Isiaka of his phone and the sum of N1,500.

Also on the same day, the convicts murdered one Muhammed Sanusi.

“As of the time of committing the offences, they were armed with guns and knives. The offences contravene sections 516, 402(2) and 316 of the Criminal Code Cap. C16 Laws of Ekiti State of Nigeria, 2012,” the police added.

A victim, Isiaka, who testified before the court, said, “The deceased and I were going to the Mosque area to buy food and charge our phones around 7.45pm. While we were approaching the charging centre, some hoodlums appeared and stopped us.

“They demanded our phones and money; we declined giving them.  They dragged me and collected my Techno phone, valued at N7,500, and a cash sum of N1,500.

“When they started beating the deceased, I ran away to call our people. Before we got there, they had left. We met the deceased in a pool of blood having been stabbed in the neck. I recognised the faces of the convicts during the act. The case was later reported at a police station.”

The police prosecutor, Felix Awoniyi, called five witnesses and tendered the statements of the four convicts and a medical report as exhibits.

But the defendants, who spoke through their counsel, called no witness.

The Chief Judge of Ekiti State, Justice John Adeyeye, in his judgement, said, “It is obvious that the defendants acted in concert as they all agreed to rob Ibrahim Isiaka and Mohammed Sanusi, who died as a result of the injury inflicted on him during the robbery.

“The defendants are cautioned and discharged on count one (conspiracy), and sentenced to death by hanging until they be dead on counts two (armed robbery) and three (murder). May the Lord have mercy on your souls.”
