African champions, D’Tigress have failed to make it beyond the preliminary stage of the ongoing Tokyo 2020 Olympics after losing their third Group B game against the host nation, Japan.
The hosts won the tie 102-83.
This means that African champions ranked 14th in the world failed to win a single game in the group after losing against the USA and France in their first two games.
The Japanese team were too hot for the D’Tigress as they won 30-22 in the first quarter, relying mostly on three-pointers. They kept the momentum and held on to their strategy of making successful points at the three-point line and working hard on the offensive and defensive ball play.
The Nigerian team failed to meet up with Japan’s intensity in the second quarter as well. Despite working so hard to raise their game, D’Tigress succumbed 21-16 to Japan.
The hosts continued from where they stopped in the second by winning the third quarter, outscoring D’Tigress 33-19, relying more again on the three-points shots.
D’Tigress in the fourth quarter left it too late to come back into the game, winning 26-18. But that was not enough as the Japanese who were playing their best game so far in the competition were home and dry.
In the game, Japan successfully recorded 19 three-points shots. The win takes to the quarterfinals, having won two out of their three group games.
On their return to the competition since the 2004 edition in Athens, Greece, the Nigerian team failed to sparkle.
