The senior national team of Nigeria were beaten 1-2 by Mexico in the first of their two friendly game in the United States of America, no thanks to an own goal by captain of the team William Troost Ekong.

Santiago Gimenez profited from a momentary loss of concentration from Chidozie Awaziem to go clear with Francis Uzoho. Who made a good stop by making himself big but he was unlucky to see his save come off the forward for the first goal of the game in the 12th minute.

Two minutes later he was on hand to deny Andres Guardado the chance to put the game beyond Nigeria with a fantastic save. Same player tested him again from range in the 31st minute and he showed solid handling to keep the scores at 0-1 as both teams head into the half time break.

Eight minutes after the restart, Calvin Bassey found Cyriel Dessers in the box with a well taken cross after a strong run, the Europa Conference League top scorer planted a header which drew Nigeria level.

The lead however didn’t last long and William Troost Ekong turned a low cross into his own net to hand Mexico the lead again just two minutes after Desssrs brought scores level.

Mexico managed the game claim the win leaving new coach of the Nigerian team Jose Peseiro with some job to do before the team play their second friendly game against Ecuador on the 2nd of June.
