Cops detained as gunmen invade Rivers police command, free detainees

Hoodlums suspected to be cultists have reportedly broken into the Okrika Police Division in Okrika Local Government Area of Rivers State and freed detainees.

The incident was said to occurred at about 2am on Tuesday.

A police officer, who spoke on the condition of anonymity because he was not authorised to speak on the matter, confirmed the incident.

It was learnt that more 10 suspects in detention, including some hardened criminals, were set free by the invaders.

The source said, “The incident has been reported to the Force Headquarters in Abuja as well as the state Police Command, Moscow Road, in Port Harcourt.

“The hoodlums broke the padlock of the cell, and also opened the backdoor of the cell where the detainees escaped from around 2am on Tuesday.

“The policemen on duty at the time the cell break occurred will account for the incident.”

When contacted, the acting spokesperson of the state police command, Grace Iringe-Koko, confirmed the incident, saying the policemen on duty at the time of the incident are being detained.

Iringe-Koko also said the state Commissioner of Police, Friday Eboka, has ordered that the matter be transferred to the State Criminal Investigation Department for proper investigation.

She said, “We are aware of the incident that happened in Okrika. We only have skeletal information now.

“But the CP has ordered that the matter he transferred to the state CID, while the police officers have been detained.”
