Associate mourns minority rights crusader, Okonny

Adiabilo Akari, an associate of the late Monday Okonny, has hailed qualities of the minority rights crusader.

Okonny died last year at the age of 86.

Akari, who is the Head of News and Current Affairs, Port Harcourt/Regional Editor, South-South, DAAR Communications Plc, said in a statement on Wednesday that the resource control crusader would be remembered as one of those who contributed in restoring peace to the Niger Delta.

The statement partly reads, “This elder statesman became a voice to be heard by the Nigerian State under the auspices of Pan Niger Delta Elders Forum and Ijaw National Congress.

“Dr Monday Okonny as one of the funding members of the Peoples’ Democratic Party, the INC, PANDEF, was active in persuading then President Olusegun Obasanjo to drop the military option to embrace dialogue while successfully calming down the boys (militants) from the creeks.
