Paris – The GOAT debate just got a new voice, and Kylian Mbappé didn’t hold back.
The Real Madrid superstar was asked the one question that divides football fans worldwide: Lionel Messi or Cristiano Ronaldo who is the greatest player of all time? And Mbappé finally gave a direct answer.
Speaking to reporters, the 27-year-old France captain smiled before diving in. “I always try to avoid these questions because, honestly, we are talking about two players who changed football forever,” Mbappé said. “I have huge respect for both Cristiano Ronaldo and Lionel Messi. They have dominated the game for nearly two decades and achieved things that many people thought were impossible.”
But when pressed to choose, Mbappé picked his childhood idol.
“If I have to choose one, I would say Cristiano Ronaldo,” he stated. “It’s not only about the trophies, the goals or the records it’s about the journey. He succeeded in different leagues, different countries and different teams. He won everywhere he went and adapted to every challenge.”
For Mbappé, the decision comes down to mentality over magic. The 2018 World Cup winner highlighted what he calls CR7’s defining trait: his relentless work ethic.
“What has always inspired me most is his mentality. His discipline, his work ethic and his desire to improve every single day are unmatched,” Mbappé explained. “He showed the world that talent is important, but mentality and hard work can take you even further. For young players, Cristiano proved that there are no limits if you are willing to sacrifice and push yourself every day. That is why, for me, he is the greatest.”
The comments will fuel debate online, especially as Mbappé himself is now chasing Ronaldo’s legacy at Real Madrid. Growing up, Mbappé admitted he plastered his bedroom walls with Ronaldo posters and modeled his training habits after the Portuguese icon.
Messi fans will point to 8 Ballon d’Ors and a 2022 World Cup win. Ronaldo fans will counter with 5 Champions League titles, goals in 5 different leagues, and over 900 career goals.
